If you’re moving into a new home, you’ll need this new home essentials list. It contains all the essentials that you actually need.
In this post, I share my new home essentials list, which is full of things you probably didn’t think of but actually need. Purchasing a house right now is expensive enough, so I recommend budgeting for all these items, too! You never know what you might need, but it’s important to be prepared.
While some of these items may not be a total necessity they will definitely make your life easier. Do you need a vacuum? No. Will it make your life convenient and make cleaning way more fun? Yes.
You will see that I have linked some of my favorites if you click on the link.

Without further ado, let’s get into this post!
This post is about new home essentials.
Kitchen New Home Essentials:
Let’s start with the kitchen! Think about waking up in your new kitchen. What do you need? Beginning with the basics. Assuming the refrigerator, dishwasher, and oven are all in your kitchen. Here’s what you need.
- Food (Obviously)
- Silverware – Linked to my favorite
- Silverware Drawer Organizer – Be sure to measure your drawer before purchasing!
- Plates & Bowls – Linked to a good affordable set from Target
- Mugs
- Glass Cups – Here is a basic glass tumbler set
- Microwave
- Cooking Sheets – These are good. You can even buy lids for them!
- Parchment Paper/Tinfoil
- Trash Can – These can be stupid expensive but this one is on a major sale right now
- Coffee Machine
- Toaster
- Garbage Bags
- Cooking Utensils
- Mixing Bowls – Especially essential if you’re a baker
- Pots & Pans – A good starter set from Martha Stewart
- Tupperware
- Spices ( Salt & Pepper!!)
- Sponges
- Measuring Set Cups & Tablespoons
- Glass Measuring Cup – Literally one of my kitchen essentials, so handy especially when melting butter!
- Dish soap & Dishwasher Pods
- Oven Mitts – I like this inspective set from Walmart, under $15
- Dish Towels
- Cutting Boards – Wood cutting boards gross me out so I use plastic ones and these are BPA free
- Paper Towels
- Knife Block – This is a cute set from Martha Stewart
- Disinfecting wipes
- Multipurpose spray
I think this is a really great starting point on the items you actually need in your kitchen to be functional. This is everything that we would need to have in our kitchen to get started. Obviously, along the way, we will add more as time goes on.
Bathroom New Home Essentials:
Next, let’s go to the bathroom. When it comes to the bathroom, these items are all real essentials that you should not go without. Some of these items you may already have such as your shower supplies but there are many other things that youll most definitely be needing.
- Toilet Paper
- Hand Soap
- Hand Towels – These are the cutest, I am obsessed!
- Towels
- Bath Mat – To match the hand towels
- Little Trash Can
- Toothbrush
- Toothpaste
- Toilet Brush & Bowl – A good basic
- Plunger
- Disinfecting wipes
- Toilet Bowl Cleaner – My go to toilet cleaner that I’ve used for years
- Shower Curtain
- Shower Rod
- Shampoo & Conditioner, Body Wash, Razors
This bathroom new home essentials list is pretty much nonnegotiable. You must definitely need everything on this list and I don’t think you can argue that!
Living Room New Home Essentials:
When it comes to living room new home essentials you really don’t need much besides something to sit on. However, these are the essentials that most of us would consider that we need. A TV may not be essential but many of us consider it to be!
- Couch
- Throw Blanket – Good basic to have
- Pillows
- Side Table
- Rug
- TV – I really want this TV and I will have it some day!
- Wall Mount
- Lamps
- Coasters – I love these marble coasters
All in all, I think this is a great starting point for living room new home essentials. If I had to pick 3 things I would say the TV, Couch, and throw blanket would be my essentials. Pillows and lighting are also very important!
Bedroom New Home Essentials:
Moving onto the bedroom new home essentials we have a few basic items to put together a room. From a mattress and bedroom to bedding, to lighting and hangers for all your clothes. You can’t forget the hangers!
- Mattress
- Bedframe
- Sheets & Pillow Cases
- Comforter
- Pillows – You get a lot with your money with these
- Side Tables
- Lamps
- Alarm Clock
- Charging Cords
- Hangers
- Hamper – This hamper is pretty genius
In addition to this list, I would add a dresser especially if you don’t have a large closet space. So a dresser may or may not be apart of your new home essentials.
Laundry New Home Essentials:
If you’re lucky enough to have a designated laundry room then you may want to add more to this insanely basic list! But all you really need are these items.
- Laundry Detergent
- Stain Remover – Everyone swears by this
- Dryer Sheets
- Laundry Basket
Like I said if you happen to have a laundry room you might want to add more to this list.
Outdoor New Home Essentials:
Outdoor new home essentials are not something I really want to think about but they are most definitely needed. For starters, you will need a lawn mover if you have grass. You’ll also want a house to water your yard, and garden, clean your car with, etc.
- Lawn Mower
- Hose
- Rake
- Spade Shovel
- Hedge Trimmers
- Leaf Blower
- Snow Shovel
- Ice Melt
- Patio Table and Chairs – A cute patio set that won’t break the bank
- Grill
Depending on where you live will depend on what you actually need. Some may never need a snow shovel and ice melt while others may need this all year round. Moral of the story: always plan for what you need!
Cleaning Supplies & Other New Home Essentials:
Finally, here is a list of various cleaning supplies and other new home essential items that youll most likely need in your new home. I would say a broom and dustpan are essential for every home, you never know when you’re going to need them.
- Broom and Dustpan

- Dishwasher Cleaner
- Phone charging cords
- Slippers
- Lightbulbs
- Batteries
- Scissors
- Masking tape
